An excerpt from Ann Hu’s directorial debut, “Shadow Magic / 西洋鏡” (2000), about the beginnings of cinema in China, starring Xia Yu, Jared Harris, and Xing Yufei. Set in Beijing in 1902, a young portrait photographer, Liu Jinglun comes across Englishman, Raymond Wallace, who has brought with him motion picture camera, project, and some silent film reels. Liu is fascinated by the “shadow magic” and is eager to learn about this new technology and becomes Raymond’s business partner.
